ñit’iy · Quechua: to press, to squeeze

Same files. Less weight.

Drop a folder to compress it, drop an archive to open it. Fast, native and private — Nitiy never connects to the internet.

Coming soon to the Mac App StoreSee how it works

Free. Requires macOS 26.2 or later.

  2. ZIP · level 612.07 MB
  3. NIT · Balanced6.64 MB
  4. NIT · Ultra5.81 MB
  5. 7Z · -mx=95.28 MB

Example: 58 MB of Rust crate source, 5,000 files, measured on one dataset. Photos, video and Office documents are already compressed and shrink far less. 7Z at maximum is smaller still.

Workflow

Drop it. Choose how. Open it.

Nitiy works out what you meant: files and folders get compressed, archives get extracted.

  1. 01

    Drop

Drag files or folders onto Nitiy to compress them, or drag an archive to extract it.

    • Open archives straight from Finder
    • Finder actions
    • Shortcuts actions: compress, extract
  2. 02

    Choose

Eight formats to compress to, four levels from speed to size. Protect NIT, 7Z and ZIP with an optional password (AES-256 for ZIP and 7Z); Nitiy can generate strong ones and remember them in your Keychain.

    Look inside

See an archive’s contents as a tree and search it before you extract. Choose where the files go.

NIT format

NIT — Nitiy’s own format.

Built for speed on Apple silicon (it also runs on Intel).

  • Roughly half the size of a ZIP for source code and text.
  • Optional encryption with Argon2id and ChaCha20-Poly1305 — file names are hidden too.
  • Quick Look previews for NIT files.

On your Mac

Safe by default. Made for Mac.

Secure extraction

Blocks path traversal, unsafe symlinks and decompression bombs, and asks before extracting unusually large archives.

Disk space check

Checks free disk space before it starts.

Nothing leaves your Mac

No account, no ads, no analytics, no internet connection. See the privacy policy.

Made for Mac

Finder actions, Quick Look previews for NIT files, Shortcuts actions for compressing and extracting, and Light and Dark Mode.

FAQ

Quick answers.

What does Nitiy cost?

Nitiy 1.0 is free.

Which Macs does it run on?

Nitiy requires macOS 26.2 or later. It is built for speed on Apple silicon and also runs on Intel.

Can Nitiy create RAR files?

No. Nitiy can open RAR files, but creating them is not supported because the format is proprietary.

Can macOS open a password-protected ZIP made by Nitiy?

Nitiy encrypts ZIP files with AES-256. The built-in macOS Archive Utility cannot open AES-encrypted ZIPs; Nitiy, 7-Zip and most other tools can. ZIP passwords can only contain ASCII characters (no accents or ñ) — use 7Z or NIT if you need those.

Does Nitiy connect to the internet?

No. It has no account, no ads, no analytics and no internet connection.

I forgot an archive’s password.

Encrypted archives cannot be recovered without the password. If you saved it, look in the macOS Keychain.

The name — Quechua · to press, to squeeze

Nitiy takes its name from ñit’iy, a Quechua word its creator associates with pressing and squeezing — which is what a compressor does. It is an independent project from Bolivia, made by Carlos López.
